What Are Wrinkle Patches?

According to Kathleen Suozzi, MD, a dermatologic surgeon and the director of aesthetic dermatology at Yale Medicine in New Haven, a wrinkle patch is a piece of adhesive paper worn overnight to keep your muscles in place, with the goal of lessening or preventing wrinkles. They are commonly used on the upper body, particularly around the eyes, forehead, mouth, neck, and chest. According to Dr. Suozzi, some contain popular skin-care ingredients such as retinol and are similar to popular sheet masks on the market. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), retinol can improve skin texture, pigmentation, and tone (AAD). "Many other instant formulations have a silicone base that provides instant wrinkle-smoothing," she adds.

The majority of wrinkle patches are reusable and cost less than $50 per package. A pack of 144 single-use Frownies strips, for example, costs $22 on Amazon, while a set of two Wrinkles Schminkles products for the forehead costs $30, with up to 20 uses per patch.

Luxury patches are also available. Natura Bissé sells a $440 set infused with "powerful anti-aging ingredients" such as Octamioxyl, conotoxin, copper, and collagen peptides.

How do these patches work, exactly?

Essentially, each of these patches is made of medical-grade silicone, which creates the ideal environment for skin moisture retention. It prevents outside air from entering the skin and instead draws moisture from the skin, creating a plumping effect in the affected area. It also increases blood flow to the area, which increases collagen production and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. There will be no botox or retinol, only silicone! They're also great if you have sensitive skin or are pregnant, because they're non-invasive and don't use ingredients like retinol to remove wrinkles.

How Should You Use Facial Wrinkle Patches?

It is recommended that you begin by thoroughly cleansing and drying your face. You should avoid using your regular skincare products in any areas where you intend to apply the patches, as this may affect how well the patches adhere to your skin. Remove the patches in the morning to reveal smoother, softer skin!

In-office procedures

If you don't believe that home remedies are helping to firm your skin, you should consult with a dermatologist about in-office procedures.

Less invasive

Laser peel

Laser skin resurfacing aims to stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of your skin while peeling away the top layer of skin, improving texture and tone.

One treatment costs between $1,200 and $2,000 USD. Although the effects of this treatment are not permanent, you may notice firmer skin for several years afterward.

Ultrasound therapy

The area under your chin, as well as your face and neck, are all targets for ultrasound therapy. It is usually less than $2,000.

To stimulate collagen production, ultrasound waves penetrate deep into your skin. Some people only require one round of this therapy, while others require repeat treatment.

Radiofrequency

Another type of treatment is radio frequency, which stimulates protein production in your skin's deeper layers in an attempt to firm it up.

Radio frequency therapy has been shown to be as effective as, if not more effective than, cosmetic firming creams.

This treatment costs around $2,000 per round, and it may need to be repeated over a number of years.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses tiny needles to prick your skin in order to stimulate collagen production. According to one company, Dermapen, each session can cost between $100 and $700. To see results, you'll most likely need several sessions spread out over three to four months.

Microneedling results can take several months to become apparent, and they are not always permanent.

Botox

Botox is a non-surgical injectable medication. On average, it costs between $300 and $400 per treatment, and the effects of one treatment last three to four months.

Botox essentially paralyzes certain muscles in your face, making your skin appear smoother and less wrinkled.

Kybella

Kybella is an injectable medication that destroys fat cells under your chin. It’s meant to reduce the appearance of a double chin, and the treatment is meant to be permanent.

Sometimes, several rounds of the injection are necessary to see results. According to self-reported costs on RealSelf.com, the average cost of Kybella is $1,350 per treatment.

More invasive

Facelift surgery

A facelift is an inpatient surgical procedure in which a physician removes excess and sagging skin from your face, "pulling back" the skin to make it appear taut.

It ranges between $7,000 and $11,000 in price. Facelifts are performed under general anesthesia and can include the skin on your neck as well.

Facelifts can be "complete," which means a long incision that begins at your brow line and runs the length of your face, usually within your hairline. Facelifts with "mini" incisions have shorter recovery times.

How long do wrinkle patches last?

While the results aren't permanent, they usually last for about three to four months, much longer than any benefit you'll get from topical silicone patches. Onto my first-hand experience. The application directions are clear, and the process is easy—you simply peel and stick.
