Facials How Often

How Often Do You Really Need Facials?

Many estheticians will advise you to get a facial every four weeks. This is because it takes that long for skin cells to go through their full life cycle of cell growth and make their way from the dermis to the skin's surface, where they are naturally sloughed off.

Which Elements Influence the Facial Monthly Routine?

A few factors, such as your skin type, can alter the once-a-month recommendation. For a client with acne, for example, recommending that they come in every one to two weeks so that the aesthetician can perform professional chemical peels and focus on extractions is likely. Those with oily or acne-prone skin can generally tolerate facials more frequently than those with sensitive or dry skin. "Those people may opt for a facial less frequently, like every eight weeks, to decrease the likelihood of inflammation," Corey L. Hartman, MD, board certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology, told POPSUGAR in an interview.

The season, the type of treatment, and whether or not you have a special event coming up can all influence how frequently you get a facial. Schedule your first facial as soon as you get engaged and plan to come monthly so you can find an aesthetician who understands you and your skin. According to estheticians, once your wedding is one to two months away, coming more frequently will yield the best results.

It all comes down to your skin's regeneration process, which is why getting a facial monthly or biweekly is so beneficial. "Because skin cells regenerate every 14-28 days, it's critical to remember to cycle treatments so that you're impacting the skin cycle when it matters most," Dr. Hartman explained. "One of any skin procedure is a treat, but three is a treatment, in my opinion. In other words, the long-term effects of repeating the procedure have a greater impact than doing something once and never repeating it."

Of course, there are a lot more modalities that can be added to a basic facial to enhance the results. Micro current, LED light, ultrasound and high frequency are just a few examples.

Now for the answer. While it is true that the full life cycle of cell growth is approximately 30 days (give or take), this thought process was established way back when exfoliating at home was rare, and if it was done, it was a gommage or facial scrub used only once every few weeks, which simply did not provide an adequate amount of cellular turnover. Exfoliation products, such as sonic cleansing brushes, facial scrubs, retinol and exfoliating cleansers, peels, toners, and serums containing lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids, are now used almost daily.

So, if the sole purpose of a facial is to catch cells at the end of their life cycle, as has always been taught, you don't need a once-a-month professional facial if you use exfoliants regularly at home. (Of course, if you don't exfoliate at all at home, that's a different story.)

That being said, facials provide numerous skin benefits, and some people require them more than others.

Some FAQs about The Importance of Monthly or Regularly Getting Facials

But, is getting a facial really necessary every four weeks? Does it vary by skin type? Is it just a nicety or really a necessity? What does a facial actually do and why is one needed so often?

For starters, here are the main steps included in a basic facial.

  • Skin analysis followed by a cleansing
  • Exfoliation (A gentle acid or enzyme peel, ultrasonic exfoliation, microdermabrasion or bio brasion are the most common)
  • Steam
  • Massage of the face, neck and shoulders (Sometimes this is omitted for those with severe acne so there is less stimulation to the skin and the esthetician can spend more time on extractions.)
  • Manual extractions to clear out blackheads and clogged pores
  • Mask

Benefits of a facial include:

  • Expert skin analysis from someone who truly understands your unique skin type and how to best care for it.
  • Professional strength exfoliation to smooth the skin, lighten discoloration from sun and breakouts.
  • Manual extraction of blackheads and clogged pores to create smoother and less-bumpy skin.
  • Intensive hydration to repair the skin’s moisture barrier to keep skin looking plump and moist.
  • Facial massage to increase circulation to encourage brighter, glowing skin.
  • A scope for skin cancer (An experienced esthetician can call out changing moles that you may be overlooking and encourage you to get regular skin cancer screenings.)
  • Help for maintaining youthful and healthy-looking skin. (If you want to have younger-looking skin, there are many additional treatments that can be added on to a facial to encourage this.)
  • Professional guidance for your home care routine. (This includes seasonal, environmental, hormonal and age-related changes occurring with the skin.)
  • It slows down the aging process.
  • It reduces stress and relieves psychological distress.
  • It improves the circulation of your blood in your body.
  • Time for you and only you.

You really NEED a facial once a month (if not more), if your skin has…

  • Closed comedones are small clogged bumps or whiteheads under the skin that are not painful and do not go away no matter what you do at home. (No laser or exfoliating peel can replace professional extractions to remove pore blockage. Once the pores have been cleaned, salicylic acid exfoliating products will help to keep them clean, requiring fewer extractions in the future.)
  • Acne that needs to be dried up and post-breakout marks that need to be faded.
  • Brown spots and discoloration that you’re looking to lighten (Chemical peels are usually required to get this done.)

Acne, clogged pores, and brown spots require consistent care to stay on top of the condition and keep the skin looking clear. So, in these cases, I consider facials to be a true necessity, and I frequently advise clients to come in weekly for additional treatments in addition to a facial.

Our facials at Mediterranean Beauty Spa are more personalized and results-oriented than ever before, and if your goal is to care for your skin in the best way possible (even if no acne or brown spots are present), make a facial treatment a regular part of your skin care maintenance. Simply put, putting your face in the hands of a skin care professional, combined with a good home care routine tailored to your unique skin type, can work wonders.
